Damask is, by definition, the weaving of a design into a cloth as compared to printing a design onto a cloth. Therefore, a damask design is a permanent part of the cloth. The subtlety and elegance of the design is what makes a damask fabric so special. There are a number of weaving and dyeing techniques used in the production of a damask design, each of which yields a slightly different effect. For example, to achieve the subtle colors of a damask, you can piece dye the cloth, or yarn dye the weft (fill) yarns, or yarn dye and then piece dye, or yarn dye both the warp and weft yarns.
All the Damask sheets available under the Lisa Galimberti and Belisari labels are manufactured in Italy. Does it matter? Certainly anyone can weave a damask cloth given the appropriate equipment, but it is in the details of the production that craftsmanship has its value. Quite simply, Italy has a heritage of producing damask cloth. The centuries of experience are evident in the way the damask fabric has "life." Italian damask fabrics simply look and feel better, and the damask design has more depth and complexity.
To complete the process, all our damask sheets are sewn in Italy. Most are finished with a hemstitch, for which Italy is justifiably renowned.
