Many of the issues raised in discussing down comforters are pertinent to down pillows, particularly the quality and specifications of the fill. (Please see our down comforter page.) But the ultimate task of a down comforter is to keep you warm with as little weight as possible, whereas a down pillow needs to provide support. These different goals mean different down & feather combinations. The biggest plus to a down pillow vs. a synthetic pillow is the ability to gently contour to your head and neck, giving a natural support. Furthermore, all other things being equal, a down & feather pillow will last longer than a synthetic pillow.

A word about allergies. Many people think they are allergic to down. Without commenting on anyone's individual situation, often the allergy is to the dust that a poorly made down product many contain. When properly cleaned in the manufacturing process, a down pillow or comforter should not cause any allergic reation.
